How do You normally act on constructive criticism...?
Closed

I’ve always envied people who can graciously accept constructive criticism. It seems I was not born with that trait, and throughout my career I’ve struggled with receiving feedback, even when it was entirely accurate.....

At the moment I hear the words of critique, my heartbeat quickens and my mind begins to race....first in search of an explanation for this assault on my person and then for a retort to rationalize whatever actions are in question.....

And I’m not alone..... Unfortunately, in the heat of the moment, many of us react with defensiveness and anger or...even worse...attack the person giving us feedback...

But the truth is, we need to get over it. We know there’s value in constructive criticism.....how else would we identify weaknesses and areas of improvement?....and being able to handle it calmly and professionally will only help us maintain relationships and be more successful in everything we do....

I do realize that feedback is not easy to give and it’s certainly not easy to receive, but it will help us now and in the long run....

I just silently take it, think about what was said to me later and act accordingly.

Well it's "constructive" so that means it is meant to help you, not break you down. I'm really good with this. I like feedback - good or bad. I would rather know if I am messing up so that I can improve. I've been told I am an "overachiever" in the sense that I do more than I should.....so I like to get all the information and do things right. Or even improve it. So for me this just gets me where I need to be. I can't stand it when people have a problem and moan about it but don't actually tell the person. Like, how they ever going to know!?
